Project Summary
In the coastal hills of La Jolla, we were invited to restore a charming outdoor living space owned by artist Becky Guttin. This project focused on the maintenance and revitalization of a variety of teak and rustic wood furniture pieces — all set against a backdrop of terracotta tiles, lush greenery, and a panoramic ocean view. After years of exposure to salt air and sun, the furniture had faded and dried out, losing much of its original character. Our goal was to restore their natural beauty while ensuring long-lasting protection from the elements.
What We Did
We began by inspecting each furniture piece to determine the level of wear and sun damage. From handcrafted benches to weathered side tables and a vintage wooden chest, each item required a custom approach. The surfaces were thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, salt buildup, and any remnants of old treatments. Once prepped, we applied Cabot Australian Timber Oil (ATO) — a deep-penetrating formula ideal for hardwoods like teak. This oil not only restores color and enhances the grain, but also offers superior protection against UV rays and moisture, which are especially important in oceanfront environments like San Diego.
The Result
The transformation was both visual and functional. The rich, warm tones of the teak furniture now complement the earthy hues of the terracotta tiles and the surrounding desert-style landscape.
