Should you cover your teak furniture?  This question frequently arises for those who have outdoor teak patio furniture.  The answer is not as simple as “yes” or “no”; it depends on the condition of your furniture, where it is located and what type of cover you use.

Caring For Teak Patio Furniture—Take Care Of Your Investment

If you want to take care of your teak patio furniture, there are a couple of things you can do to keep it looking great.  First, locate your teak furniture where it does not sit directly in the sunlight if at all possible.  The harsh rays of the sun can fade the appearance of any wood, so it is important for you to protect your furniture from solar damage.

Next, you should clean your teak patio furniture periodically.  Cleaning will help you remove surface dirt and grime, but should never be harsh.  Simply spray your teak furniture with a hose; you can even apply a mild solution of warm water, detergent and a tablespoon or so of bleach, particularly if you have deep-seated grime on your furniture.  Just be sure to rinse the furniture thoroughly.  Do not scrub; simply hose the dirt off.

Should I Cover My Teak Furniture?

Teak furniture may be covered, particularly if you are not going to be using it for some time or if it will be sitting in an area full of dust or tree sap.  However, if you do choose to cover your furniture, it is important to choose the right type of protective cover.

You should never use any type of tarp or vinyl cover.  These types of covers will not allow your teak furniture to “breathe” and may wind up doing more damage than good.  It is not unusual for a plastic or vinyl tarp to lead to mold and mildew on your furniture which must then be cleaned using professional methods.

Instead, you should use a breathable material such as jute, cotton or linen.  A cover made of almost any type of natural fabric will give you the protection you need to keep your furniture clean while still allowing it to stay mildew- and mold-free.
