Exotic woods from Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia are dense enough that some sink in water. That density resists warping, splitting, rot, and insect damage, but makes the boards harder to clean, sand, and seal than cedar or standard lumber. Each species wants its own approach: Ipe is extremely dense and difficult to penetrate with oils, so it needs specific cleaning and sealing techniques, while Mangaris shows tannin staining, and requires a dedicated cleaning step. Ipe and Cumaru also need more maintenance than pine. Thorough surface prep is essential before applying new stain — skip it, and you get bubbling, peeling, and uneven color within a season.

The heavy-duty products we use — penetrating sealers, exotic-specific deck cleaners, oxalic acid brighteners — are not sold in home improvement stores, and deep cleaning should always be followed by a brightener to neutralize pH and restore color. Method matters just as much: sanding smooths rough patches and opens the wood's pores so the finish absorbs, and thorough surface prep comes before any stain. Product choice is the third piece — high-quality penetrating stains let the wood breathe while protecting it, a UV-blocking stain shields boards from intense sun, and a semi-transparent finish balances grain visibility against UV protection.

Old decking can be restored if the boards remain structurally sound. Ipe and Mangaris resist rot and insect damage for decades when maintained, so most weathered decks qualify. Inspection comes first — we check for loose fasteners, damaged boards, soft spots, and thickness loss. After restoration, regular maintenance extends the life of that work and keeps an Ipe deck from showing signs of deterioration. Decks in sunny areas need washing and a fresh coat of stain every two to three years, and coastal exposure shortens that interval since salt air works alongside UV.
